DC Finest: Suicide Squad: The Nightshade Odyssey #1

DC Finest: Suicide Squad: The Nightshade Odyssey #1 is a trade paperback collection released by DC Comics to spotlight the mid-1980s revitalization of the Suicide Squad. This specific volume gathers foundational stories written by John Ostrander, who is credited with transforming the team from a niche group into the modern black-ops ensemble that defines the franchise today. The collection centers on the narrative arc involving the character Nightshade, exploring the complex moral terrain and interpersonal dynamics that became hallmarks of the Ostrander era.

The aesthetic of the collection draws from the original interior artwork of creators such as Luke McDonnell, whose grounded, gritty style helped pivot the Squad toward a more realistic and mature tone. The series was designed to curate these influential early issues for contemporary readers, emphasizing the strategic storytelling and the high-stakes, rotating-roster format. It has been received by comic scholars and fans alike as an essential record of the transition from traditional superhero team-ups to the more subversive, espionage-driven narratives of the late 20th century.
