De avonturen van Nero #44

De avonturen van Nero, created by the Flemish cartoonist Marc Sleen, is one of the most significant and long-running comic series in Belgian history. Issue number 44, titled 'De hoed van Geeraard de Duivel,' was published during the peak of Sleen’s career as a solo artist. The series began in 1947, originally serialized in newspapers, and became known for its surrealist humor, satirical takes on contemporary Belgian politics, and an ever-expanding cast of eccentric characters that resonated deeply with the local readership.

The design of the series evolved from simple newspaper strips into complex graphic narratives. Sleen was famously fast-paced, often producing a page a day, which lent the series a spontaneous and energetic quality. Issue 44 reflects the signature style that solidified Nero as a household name in Flanders, blending slapstick adventure with absurdist fantasy. The character of Nero became a cultural icon, celebrated for his optimism and penchant for getting involved in global and local affairs that were often presented through a lens of gentle, whimsical satire.
