De avonturen van Nero #49

De avonturen van Nero, created by the Flemish cartoonist Marc Sleen, stands as a pillar of Belgian comics. Issue number 49, titled 'De hoed van Geeraard de Duivel', was first published in the mid-1960s during the height of Sleen's prolific career. The series emerged from the post-war Flemish press, specifically the newspaper De Standaard, and became renowned for its satirical commentary on current events, blending surreal humor with adventurous romps across the globe.

The design of the series is characterized by Sleen’s distinct, fluid ink-line and his penchant for featuring historical and mythological figures in contemporary settings. As the illustrator and writer, Sleen prioritized pacing and accessibility, ensuring the comic remained a staple for generations of Flemish families. While Sleen was known for his incredible work rate, producing new pages daily, his characters like Nero, Petoetje, and Adhemar became cultural icons, celebrated for their grounded, everyday appeal despite their fantastical circumstances.
