Where it came from
Released in 1993, this miniseries was the first solo outing for Death, the beloved manifestation of the afterlife from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. Published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint, the story was created to explore the human side of the character as she spent a single day living among mortals to understand the value of their brief lives.
The interior art was provided by Chris Bachalo, whose distinct, whimsical style perfectly complemented Gaiman's narrative themes. The cover was illustrated by Dave McKean, who had defined the visual identity of the Sandman universe since its inception. Upon release, the series was received with critical acclaim for its empathetic tone and remains a foundational text of 1990s dark fantasy literature.
