Where it came from
The Dick Turpin Annual 1980 was published by IPC Magazines in late 1979 to capitalize on the popularity of the television series 'Dick Turpin,' which aired on ITV in the United Kingdom. These annuals were a staple of British children's holiday gifts during the era, typically featuring a mix of illustrated comic strips, text-based adventure stories, and puzzles centered around the romanticized highwayman character played by Richard O'Sullivan.
The design and content were intended to provide younger viewers with supplemental stories that mirrored the swashbuckling tone of the televised program. The illustration style followed the standard aesthetic of late-seventies British comic annuals, relying on high-contrast ink work and dynamic, action-oriented panels. It was received as a standard piece of television tie-in merchandise, primarily serving as a seasonal commodity for the burgeoning market of youth-oriented licensed media.
