Where it came from
Did You Hear About Mimi Green was an autobiographical comic series written and illustrated by Anne Koyama. Emerging from the independent, small-press scene of the mid-2000s, the work is noted for its raw, diaristic approach to storytelling. Koyama utilized the medium to process personal experiences, focusing on the titular character's life and the intricacies of her daily environment with a distinct, unadorned visual style.
The second issue continued the series' commitment to minimalist, slice-of-life narratives, capturing an aesthetic that prioritized emotional authenticity over high-production polish. Within the underground comics community, the series was recognized for its sincerity and for contributing to a wave of self-published memoirs that defined much of the indie comics culture in Toronto during that period. Koyama's work remains a significant artifact of this localized, creative DIY era.
