Digger #1

Digger #1 was created by cartoonist Ursula Vernon and first released as a webcomic in 2003, later collected into print format. The series follows the journey of a wombat named Digger who finds herself displaced from her home and forced to navigate a surreal, dangerous fantasy landscape. Vernon designed the comic with a focus on dry humor and mythological subversion, deliberately moving away from traditional hero tropes to center the narrative on a pragmatic, often grumpy protagonist struggling to understand the absurd logic of the world she has entered.

The physical print editions of Digger, including the inaugural volume, were produced to collect the sprawling webcomic narrative into a tangible reading experience. The work was met with significant critical acclaim within the independent comics community for its unique voice and visual style, eventually winning the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2012.
