DirkJan #31

DirkJan is a long-running and highly influential Dutch gag-a-day comic strip created by Mark Retera, which first appeared in 1989. The series is celebrated for its surreal, often absurd humor and its willingness to tackle taboo subjects, setting it apart from traditional newspaper strips. Issue #31 is part of the established series of annual or periodic compilations released by Uitgeverij L, which collect the newspaper strips into a portable, digestible format for fans.

Mark Retera, the sole creator, developed the series while studying psychology, a background that arguably informs the strip's distinctively warped perspective on human behavior. The character DirkJan himself serves as an everyman anchor for a world populated by eccentric neighbors, historical figures, and bizarre scenarios. Upon its debut and throughout its long publication history, the series gained a dedicated cult following and was honored with the Stripschapprijs in 2002, recognizing Retera's significant contribution to Dutch comic culture.
