Where it came from
El Diablo #1 was published by DC Comics in August 1989, marking the debut of the Rafael Sandoval incarnation of the character. Created by writer Gerard Jones and artist Mike Parobeck, the series emerged during a period when DC was exploring more grounded, socially conscious narratives within their superhero line. The story followed a city councilman in Texas who dons a costume to combat corruption, distancing the character from the supernatural western roots of his predecessor.
The visual direction led by Mike Parobeck favored a clean, illustrative style that stood out against the grittier aesthetics prevalent in late 1980s comics. While the series received moderate attention for its political themes and grounded tone, it occupies a specific niche in DC history as an attempt to modernize legacy mantle-sharing. It remains a notable example of late-Bronze/early-Modern Age storytelling that focused on local urban justice rather than cosmic threats.
