Eleanor & the Egret #3

Eleanor & the Egret #3, released in 2017, serves as a pivotal installment in the five-issue limited series published by Black Mask Studios. Created by writer John Layman and artist Sam Kieth, the series emerged during a period of experimentation in indie comics, blending surrealist art deco aesthetics with a whimsical, caper-driven narrative centered on a master thief and her giant, telepathic avian companion. The story follows Eleanor as she navigates a stylized, whimsical world, pursued by detective Auldin as she attempts to pilfer priceless artifacts.

The visual identity of the series is largely defined by Sam Kieth, known for his distinctively angular and emotive character designs that contrast sharply with traditional superhero art styles. In the third issue, the narrative deepens the connection between Eleanor and the Egret, while further cementing the series' reputation for visual eccentricity. The book was received as a stylistic departure for Layman, following the success of his work on Chew, and was generally praised by critics for its unique artistic direction and commitment to its own peculiar, dreamlike internal logic.
