ElfQuest #17

ElfQuest #17 was published in 1980 by WaRP Graphics as part of the original series that pioneered the independent comic book movement. Created by Wendy and Richard Pini, the series emerged from a desire to tell a high-fantasy epic that subverted traditional tropes, focusing on the Wolfriders—a tribe of elves struggling for survival in a harsh, primitive world. The publication of this issue took place during the height of the series' initial success, when it became a cornerstone of the burgeoning alternative comic scene.

The artwork, characteristically detailed and emotive, was executed by Wendy Pini, whose distinctive style became synonymous with the franchise. In this era, the Pinis maintained creative autonomy over their work, ensuring the story remained deeply character-driven and serialized in a way that resonated with a burgeoning community of dedicated readers. The issue remains a testament to the duo's commitment to visual storytelling and world-building, widely recognized for bringing a unique, earthy aesthetic to the fantasy genre.
