Enkiri Ema #2

The Enkiri Ema series functions as a contemporary exploration of traditional Japanese votive tablets, known as ema, which are typically found at shrines for devotees to write their prayers and wishes. This particular project reinterprets the spiritual art form through a modern, serialized lens, moving the concept from the sacred space of a shrine into the realm of collectible stationery and design objects. The second issue in this series continues the thematic focus on the ritual of severance and new beginnings, balancing minimalist aesthetics with the cultural weight of the original Shinto practice.

Designed with a focus on tactile materiality and symbolic iconography, Enkiri Ema #2 was crafted to evoke the simplicity of historical woodblock printing while utilizing refined paper stocks that resonate with modern stationery enthusiasts. The design team sought to strip back the ornamentation found on standard mass-produced ema to highlight the raw, functional intent of the object. Upon its release, the series was received by the design community as a meditative study in physical permanence, praised for its commitment to maintaining the solemn, deliberate nature of the traditional ritual within a contemporary format.
