Where it came from
Ex-Mutants #12 was published in 1993 by Eternity Comics, a division of Malibu Comics. The series began as an independent title created by David Lawrence and Ron Lim, centering on a group of genetically altered humans striving to protect a post-apocalyptic Earth. By the time this issue was released, the title had shifted into its second volume, reflecting the era's trend toward gritty, high-stakes superhero narratives.
The visual direction for this period of the series moved away from its earlier roots, adopting a style emblematic of the early 1990s direct-market comic book aesthetic. This issue features artwork that emphasizes the muscular, kinetic character designs typical of the Image Comics-influenced landscape that dominated the industry at the time, prioritizing dynamic panels and a somber, survivalist tone that defined the later stages of the Ex-Mutants’ run.
