Where it came from
Excalibur #117, published by Marvel Comics in early 1998, arrived during the final stretch of the series' original run. As a title centered on a team of British-based mutants, the series had evolved significantly from its original Chris Claremont and Alan Davis roots into a more kinetic, ensemble-driven book that often navigated the shifting status quo of the X-Men universe in the late nineties.
The issue features the work of writer Ben Raab and artist Dale Eaglesham, who took the reins to guide the team toward its conclusion. The creative team aimed to balance the character-driven humor that defined the franchise with the high-stakes superhero action characteristic of the era, ultimately serving as a narrative bridge leading toward the series' eventual transition into other X-Men spinoff projects.
