Where it came from
Excalibur #122 was published in 1998 as part of the long-running Marvel Comics series focusing on a British-based team of mutants. By this point in the series' history, the title had moved through several creative shifts following its inception by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, settling into a tone that often balanced superhero spectacle with the whimsical, often absurdist sensibilities established by its original run.
This specific issue features writing by Ben Raab and art by Dale Eaglesham, who took over the duties during a transitional period for the title. The creative direction aimed to wrap up lingering plot threads and redefine the team's roster before the series reached its conclusion shortly thereafter. It remains a representative example of late-nineties Marvel storytelling, characterized by a mix of high-stakes action and character-driven subplots intended to satisfy a dedicated, long-term readership.
