Where it came from
Exiles #33, released in 2003, serves as a pivotal entry in the series created by Judd Winick. The title was conceived as a narrative sandbox that allowed Marvel Comics to explore alternate realities and 'what-if' scenarios by assembling a team of displaced mutants from across the multiverse. This specific issue is part of the 'Legacy' story arc, focusing on the character Mimic and the team's ongoing struggle to fix fractured timelines to return home.
The issue features interior art by Jim Calafiore, who became a defining visual presence for the series. His style provided a grounded, gritty aesthetic that helped anchor the increasingly complex multiversal premise. The series was generally well-received by fans and critics of the era for its willingness to kill off major characters and its high-stakes storytelling, which distinguished it from the more status-quo-heavy titles in the wider X-Men franchise at the time.
