Where it came from
Published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in early 2007, Fables #56 serves as the second chapter in the 'The Good Prince' story arc. This narrative thread follows Flycatcher as he ascends from his humble beginnings as the Frog Prince to a pivotal leadership role within the Fable community. The series, created and written by Bill Willingham, reimagined classic folklore characters living in clandestine exile in modern-day New York City, a premise that garnered significant critical acclaim for its dark, political subversion of fairy tales.
The interior art for this issue was provided by Mark Buckingham, who became the signature visual architect of the series. Buckingham’s illustrative style is characterized by a fluid, detailed aesthetic that manages to bridge the whimsical nature of the source material with the gritty, grounded realities faced by the characters. Upon its release, the 'Good Prince' arc was widely lauded by critics and readers alike for its emotional depth and its departure from the series' previous focus on Bigby Wolf, marking a high point in the long-running title's narrative history.
