Fables #58

Fables #58, released in 2007, is a pivotal chapter in the long-running Vertigo series created by writer Bill Willingham. As part of the 'The Good Prince' story arc, this issue focuses on Flycatcher's internal struggle and transformation, serving as a critical character study within the sprawling epic. The narrative explores themes of leadership, trauma, and the nature of heroism, grounded in the dark, revisionist fairy-tale aesthetic that defined the series' success.

The interior art was provided by Mark Buckingham, whose illustrative style is synonymous with the visual identity of Fables. Buckingham utilized intricate line work and expressive character acting to convey the emotional weight of Willingham's script, specifically the transition of Flycatcher from a passive observer to a central protagonist. The issue was well-received for its character-driven pacing and its ability to expand the series' lore while maintaining the cohesive, gritty tone established by the Vertigo imprint during the mid-2000s.
