Where it came from
Fantastic Four number 199 was published by Marvel Comics in October 1978, serving as a penultimate lead-in to the series' landmark 200th issue. During this period, the creative direction was helmed by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Keith Pollard, who were tasked with maintaining the momentum of one of Marvel's most storied franchises while navigating the transition toward major anniversary milestones.
The issue features the conclusion of a story arc involving the character Impossible Man and continues the high-stakes, character-driven soap opera style that defined late seventies superhero comics. The design reflects the house style of the era, prioritizing dynamic panel layouts and expressive character work to ensure the publication remained a cornerstone of the expanding Marvel universe during a time of significant editorial shifts.
