Where it came from
Fantastic Four #249 was published by Marvel Comics in December 1982. It represents a significant chapter in the tenure of writer and artist John Byrne, who took over the title in 1981. Byrne sought to revitalize the series by returning to the core family dynamics of the characters while introducing more sophisticated, serialized storytelling that challenged the team's internal stability and moral clarity.
The issue features a self-contained story that emphasizes Byrne’s signature blend of high-concept science fiction and character-driven drama. Byrne’s artistic style, characterized by clean lines and dynamic panel layouts, was instrumental in modernizing the Fantastic Four for 1980s audiences. The work was generally well-received by fans and critics of the era, who credited Byrne with restoring the title to its status as one of Marvel's flagship properties.
