Where it came from
Fantastic Four #254, published by Marvel Comics in May 1983, serves as a pivotal installment in the tenure of writer and artist John Byrne. This issue continues the high-concept storytelling that defined Byrne's celebrated run on the title, which was instrumental in revitalizing the series by focusing on the complex interpersonal dynamics of the team while leaning into the cosmic scope established by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
The issue features a cover and interior art by Byrne, whose minimalist, clean-lined aesthetic was a departure from the more baroque styles prevalent in the late seventies. His work on this series is widely regarded by critics as a creative peak for the Fantastic Four, successfully balancing character-driven drama with the bold, imaginative science fiction elements that had been the series' hallmark since its debut.
