Fantastic Four #399

Fantastic Four #399 was published by Marvel Comics in April 1995 as part of the long-running series created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. By the mid-1990s, the title was navigating a complex landscape of editorial shifts and crossovers, with this specific era overseen by writer Tom DeFalco and artist Paul Ryan. This issue serves as a mid-point installment in the 'Atlantis Rising' crossover event, a narrative spanning several titles that explored the fallout of Namor the Sub-Mariner’s kingdom and its sociopolitical turbulence.

The creative direction during this period focused on maintaining the legacy of Marvel's First Family while integrating the more stylized, high-action aesthetic typical of 90s comic book art. Paul Ryan, known for his clean, traditionalist approach, provided the pencils, working to ground the fantastical cosmic elements within the grounded, domestic struggles of the Richards family. The issue was received as a functional chapter in the broader event, catering to established readers who remained loyal to the series through the mid-decade shifts in industry style and tone.
