Where it came from
Fantastic Four #45 was published by Marvel Comics in December 1965, during the mid-1960s creative peak of the Marvel Age. This issue is historically significant as the first appearance of the Inhumans, a race of super-powered beings created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The narrative context centered on the burgeoning mythos of the Marvel Universe, as Lee and Kirby sought to expand the scope of their stories beyond contemporary settings into the hidden, ancient corners of the world.
The issue features iconic cover art and interior work by Jack Kirby, whose dynamic, blocky illustration style defined the visual identity of the Fantastic Four. Kirby's design for the Inhumans emphasized a blend of science fiction and high-fantasy elements, reflecting the creative team's ambition to push the boundaries of comic book storytelling. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by readers for its introduction of Medusa, Gorgon, and Black Bolt, characters who would become integral to Marvel's enduring superhero canon.
