Where it came from
Farewell, My Odin, issue 2, emerged during the late 2010s as part of an experimental indie comics wave that sought to blend Norse mythology with contemporary psychological drama. Published by a small-press imprint known for prioritizing creator-owned aesthetic experimentation, the series was conceived as a deconstruction of the 'hero's journey' archetype. The creators intended to move away from traditional epic fantasy tropes, focusing instead on the isolation and identity crises of deities existing in a modern, disenchanted world.
The visual language of the issue was heavily influenced by mid-century graphic design and minimalist linework, utilizing a restricted color palette to emphasize a somber, introspective atmosphere. Upon its release, it was noted by independent comic critics for its stark, unconventional panel layouts and emotive character studies. While it maintained a niche audience, it remains a recognized example of the period's shift toward character-driven narratives within the fantasy genre.
