Firestorm #97

Firestorm #97, published in 1990, arrived during a transitional period for the character within the DC Universe. Following the conclusion of the Firestorm: The Nuclear Man series, the character underwent significant shifts in tone and direction. This specific era of the publication sought to re-establish the hero within the broader tapestry of DC's cosmic and Earth-bound superhero conflicts, balancing the character's unique elemental nature with the evolving sensibilities of late 1980s and early 1990s comic book storytelling.

The issue features the creative efforts of writer John Ostrander, who was instrumental in defining the character's modern complexity. Ostrander’s approach often leaned into sociopolitical themes and deep character introspection, moving away from traditional superhero archetypes. The visual style reflects the standard production aesthetics of DC Comics from this period, characterized by the collaborative efforts of colorists and inkers typical of the house style that sought to bridge the gap between traditional Silver Age roots and the more graphic, dramatic narratives that were gaining popularity at the time.
