Firestorm, the Nuclear Man #90

Firestorm the Nuclear Man #90, published in 1989, arrived during a transformative period for the character within the DC Universe. This issue is part of a run that navigated the complex transition from the original Gerry Conway-created iteration of the hero to the more cosmic, elemental direction established by writers like John Ostrander. The series was designed to explore the fusion of Ronnie Raymond and Mikhail Arkadin, reflecting late-Cold War anxieties and shifting the character's focus toward global ecological and geopolitical themes.

The interior artwork for this era was often characterized by a gritty, detailed style that moved away from the more traditional superhero aesthetic of the early 1980s. Tom Mandrake, known for his atmospheric and moody visual storytelling, provided significant contributions to the title during this time. The creative team aimed to ground the character's extraordinary nuclear powers in a more tangible, often somber reality, which garnered a dedicated following among readers who appreciated the darker, more introspective tone DC experimented with during the late 80s.
