Firestorm, the Nuclear Man #91

Firestorm the Nuclear Man #91, published by DC Comics in late 1989, arrived during a transformative period for the character. By this point in the series, the book had moved away from its original teenage-protagonist premise toward more mature, politically charged narratives overseen by writer John Ostrander. The issue reflects the editorial ambition of the late 1980s, which sought to ground fantastical superhero concepts in complex, real-world geopolitical tensions.

The interior artwork for this period was largely defined by Tom Mandrake, whose atmospheric and often haunting style helped establish the dark, psychological tone of Ostrander’s run. This specific era of the title is often cited by collectors as a high point for the character's narrative depth, though it faced the challenging commercial landscape of a shifting direct market where darker, more cynical hero arcs were becoming the industry standard.
