Freex #1

Freex #1 was published by Marvel Comics in September 1993 as a foundational title for the short-lived Ultraverse imprint, a superhero line developed by Malibu Comics. The series was designed to fit into a shared universe where powers were triggered by a mysterious phenomenon known as the 'Ultraverse,' aiming to capture the gritty, character-driven aesthetic prevalent in the independent comic book market of the early 1990s.

The issue was written by Gerard Jones and illustrated by Scott Kolins, who sought to depict a group of teenagers manifesting dangerous abilities while navigating alienation and societal mistrust. The title was received as a standard entry in the 1990s boom of 'mutant' style team books, standing out primarily for its connection to the unique continuity of the Ultraverse before the imprint was eventually acquired by Marvel and largely folded into their archives.
