From Eroica with Love #11

From Eroica with Love, created by Yasuko Aoike, first began its serialization in the magazine Princess in 1976. The series became a cornerstone of shōjo manga during the late 1970s and 1980s, noted for its blend of high-stakes espionage, international art theft, and the flamboyant, often comedic, interplay between its central characters, the narcissistic aristocrat Dorian Red Duke—known as 'Eroica'—and Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach. Issue 11 reflects the series' established rhythm, where the contrast between the rigid, disciplined German intelligence officer and the eccentric, wealthy art collector drives the narrative forward through global escapades.

Aoike's visual style, characterized by intricate period costuming and expressive character designs, was heavily influenced by the cultural shifts of the era and an affection for European aesthetics. The series was well-received for its unique subversion of typical spy tropes and its nuanced, if often humorous, character dynamics. While the series remains a cult classic in the West, its long-running success in Japan solidified Aoike's reputation as a master of character-driven episodic storytelling, with issue 11 continuing the trend of elaborate heist plots that defined the middle tenure of the manga's long production history.
