From Eroica with Love #4

From Eroica with Love, known in Japan as Eroica yori Ai o Komete, originated as a manga series by Yasuko Aoike in 1976. This fourth issue is part of the long-running serialization in Akita Shoten's Princess magazine. The series explores the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Dorian Red, Count of Gloria—a flamboyant, eccentric art thief—and Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach, a stern and stoic NATO commander. The title cleverly blends the 1963 film From Russia with Love with the protagonist's operatic sensibilities, setting the tone for a narrative that frequently juxtaposes international espionage with high-fashion aesthetics and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Yasuko Aoike is credited with pioneering a unique blend of historical adventure and character-driven comedy, which had a profound impact on the development of the shojo manga genre. Her design choices, particularly the elaborate, often period-appropriate costuming of the Count of Gloria, were intended to highlight the character’s extravagant persona against the rigid, bureaucratic world of the military. Upon its debut, the series was celebrated for its subversion of gender roles and its lighthearted approach to the spy thriller archetype, maintaining a dedicated following that eventually saw it translated into various international formats and digital editions.
