Garo 1968: Zenei Manga no Shikō to Kiseki #1

Garo 1968: Zenei Manga no Shikō to Kiseki was published during a pivotal era for the seminal alternative manga magazine Garo, which served as the primary incubator for the gekiga and avant-garde movements in Japan. The 1968 edition was curated to reflect the intense political and artistic ferment of the decade, capturing the spirit of creators who were pushing the medium of manga away from commercial children’s narratives toward experimental, adult-oriented expression.

The publication was designed to synthesize the historical trajectory and aesthetic philosophy of the magazine’s most radical contributors, including figures like Yoshiharu Tsuge and Seiichi Hayashi. Its visual style emphasizes the stark, high-contrast imagery and surrealist storytelling that defined Garo’s editorial identity, and it was received by critics as a vital archival effort to document how these artists challenged the traditional boundaries of Japanese sequential art during a period of significant social upheaval.
