Where it came from
Gen 13 #48 was published in 1999 as part of the WildStorm imprint, which had transitioned under the DC Comics umbrella. The series, created by Jim Lee, J. Scott Campbell, and Brandon Choi, originally emerged from the 1990s creator-owned movement, focusing on a group of teenagers with latent superpowers navigating a world of conspiracy and corporate intrigue. By the time this issue was released, the series was navigating the shifting landscape of the late-nineties comic book industry, maintaining its signature kinetic, high-energy aesthetic.
The visual identity of Gen 13 was defined by its stylistic roots in the 'Image-house style,' characterized by exaggerated anatomy and dynamic, cinematic panel layouts. Issue #48, written by Adam Warren with art by Al Rio, reflects the series' commitment to blending lighthearted character dynamics with sci-fi action tropes. At this stage in the run, the title was widely regarded as a staple of the 'cool teen' subgenre of superhero comics, praised for its self-aware tone and artistic flair, even as the medium began to move toward more grounded, deconstructionist storytelling.
