G.I. Joe #19

Published in 1983, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue #19 stands as a significant milestone in Marvel Comics' collaboration with Hasbro. Written by Larry Hama, the issue was part of a strategic effort to flesh out the backstories of the action figure line, transforming relatively nameless plastic figurines into characters with distinct personalities and military specialties. The comic quickly transcended its role as a promotional tie-in, earning acclaim for Hama's grounded, character-driven storytelling.

This specific issue is notable for its role in the expanded 'Silent Interlude' arc, which showcased a narrative style rare for the era. By relying almost entirely on visual storytelling without traditional dialogue balloons, the creative team demonstrated a mastery of pacing and motion that allowed the comic to stand on its own merits as a piece of sequential art. The issue was well-received by readers for its departure from standard comic tropes, cementing its reputation as a high point in the series' long-running success.
