G.I. Joe #2

G.I. Joe issue number two, published by Marvel Comics in 1982, arrived during the initial relaunch of the brand as a multimedia franchise. Written by Larry Hama with cover art by Herb Trimpe, this issue followed the successful launch of the series a month prior, which was designed to integrate the new 3.75-inch action figure line into a cohesive narrative universe. The series became famous for Hama's grounded, military-inspired storytelling, which focused on the camaraderie and tactical operations of the unit rather than the fantastical elements often found in superhero comics of the era.

The design of the issue reflected the transitional aesthetic of early eighties Marvel, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional military adventure tropes and the character-driven ensemble cast required by Hasbro's toy line. As the second installment, the book was pivotal in establishing the recurring threat of the organization Cobra. It was received favorably by readers and collectors alike, serving as a foundational piece in a series that would eventually run for over 150 issues and cement G.I. Joe's place in American pop culture history.
