Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1984 as part of the original G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero run, issue #24 stands as a hallmark of 1980s comic book storytelling. Written by Larry Hama with art by Mike Vosburg, the issue is famously titled 'Silent Interlude.' It was conceived as a bold experiment in visual narrative, eschewing traditional word balloons and captions entirely to focus on a purely kinetic, cinematic sequence centered on Snake Eyes' infiltration of a Cobra stronghold to rescue Scarlett.
The issue is widely lauded for its innovative approach to sequential art, effectively demonstrating how comics can convey complex action and character emotion through panel layout and body language alone. It remains a fan favorite and a frequent touchstone in discussions regarding the artistic potential of the medium. The aesthetic was deeply rooted in the gritty, tactical tone Hama established for the series, balancing the colorful nature of the Hasbro toy line with a grounded, character-driven military drama.
