Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in July 1984, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #25 serves as a pivotal entry in the series written by Larry Hama. The issue is historically significant for featuring the first appearance of the iconic villain Storm Shadow, who would become one of the franchise's most enduring characters. Hama, a veteran of the Vietnam War, infused the series with a level of tactical realism and character-driven drama that stood out during an era typically dominated by more straightforward superhero fare.
The artwork for this issue was provided by Mike Vosburg, who maintained the gritty, grounded aesthetic established by the title's early run. The narrative arc within this issue deepened the rivalry between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, establishing a complex mythology centered on the Arashikage ninja clan. This particular story was well-received by readers for its effective balance of military espionage and personal vendettas, helping to cement the comic's status as a foundational element of the G.I. Joe media empire.
