G.I. Joe #39

Released in September 1985, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue 39 was a core installment in the long-running Marvel Comics series scripted by Larry Hama. Hama, who is widely credited with defining the complex personalities and military mythos of the Joe team, used the series to blend high-stakes tactical action with soap-opera elements. This issue continued the momentum of the series during its peak popularity, a time when the comic served as the primary narrative engine for Hasbro's massive toy line, effectively expanding the world-building beyond what was possible in the animated series.

The artwork for this period was largely driven by Herb Trimpe, a veteran comic artist known for his gritty, grounded approach to action. In issue 39, the visual style maintains the classic 1980s Marvel aesthetic, focusing on clear panel layouts that emphasize the contrast between the tactical precision of the Joe team and the erratic, often villainous schemes of Cobra. The issue was received well by fans of the era for its commitment to internal continuity, as Hama treated the soldiers as distinct individuals with professional and personal stakes rather than mere brand mascots.
