G.I. Joe #17

G.I. Joe #17, published by Image Comics in 2002, emerged during the franchise's revival under the Devil's Due Publishing imprint. Following the conclusion of the long-running Marvel Comics series, this new iteration sought to modernize the tactical military aesthetic for a contemporary audience, blending nostalgic elements of the 1980s toy line with serialized, mature narrative arcs. The issue was part of a creative push to re-establish the conflict between the G.I. Joe team and the Cobra organization for a new generation of readers.

The issue features the artistic contributions of Joe Casey and Joe Benitez, who aimed to provide a grittier, more kinetic visual style compared to the earlier source material. The character designs were carefully calibrated to balance the iconic silhouettes of the classic action figures with a more cinematic, fluid comic book layout. Upon its release, it was received as a bridge between the classic fan base and the darker, more character-focused storytelling trends prevalent in early 2000s American comics.
