G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Sssilent Missions: Zartan #1

Released by Devil's Due Publishing in 2005, this one-shot issue was part of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Sssilent Missions series. The title sought to explore the covert, off-the-books operations of the G.I. Joe universe, shifting the focus toward more atmospheric, character-driven storytelling rather than traditional military conflict. This particular issue centered on Zartan, the master of disguise and leader of the Dreadnoks, providing a glimpse into his enigmatic persona and his complex role within the Cobra hierarchy.

The issue was written by Dan Jolley with interior art by E.J. Su, whose style complemented the gritty, espionage-focused narrative. The creative team aimed to ground the fantastical elements of the franchise in a more modern, noir-inspired aesthetic. While the G.I. Joe comic series had seen various publishers over the decades, the Devil's Due era is noted for its attempt to reconcile the long-standing continuity of the 1980s Marvel run with updated visual and narrative sensibilities for a 21st-century audience.
