Where it came from
Published by Image Comics in 2005, this one-shot crossover brought together two of pop culture's most recognizable action icons: the military operatives of G.I. Joe and the globetrotting archaeologist Lara Croft. The project emerged during a period when Image Comics held the licensing rights to the G.I. Joe franchise, aiming to expand the brand's reach by pairing its characters with established video game intellectual properties.
The issue was written by Dan Jolley, a veteran comic writer known for his work on various licensed properties, with interior art provided by Leonard Kirk. The narrative design leans into the high-stakes espionage and ancient mythology common to both franchises, attempting to reconcile the tactical, team-based world of the Joes with the solo, relic-hunting adventures of Tomb Raider. It was received as a niche collector's curiosity, typical of the mid-2000s trend of ambitious, unexpected crossover events.
