Giant-Size Conan #1

Giant-Size Conan #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 1974 during the peak of the company's successful adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp fantasy hero. Following the massive popularity of the monthly Conan the Barbarian series, Marvel launched the 'Giant-Size' line to capitalize on the character's reach by offering readers expanded page counts, reprints of classic material, and new stories that pushed the boundaries of the established continuity.

The issue features work by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema, a creative team synonymous with the defining Marvel era of the character. Their approach focused on maintaining the grim, visceral tone of Howard’s original prose while adapting it to the dynamic visual language of American comic books. Upon release, the issue was well-received by fans for its immersive scope, effectively bridging the gap between standard monthly comics and the more experimental, adult-oriented black-and-white magazines that Marvel was simultaneously developing for the Conan license.
