Where it came from
Released in 1994 as part of the Grendel Tales limited series, The Devil in Our Midst #4 concludes a dark, character-driven story arc set within Matt Wagner's expansive Grendel universe. This series was published by Dark Horse Comics during an era when the company frequently invited guest creators to explore the post-apocalyptic Grendel mythos, allowing writers and artists to push the boundaries of the established narrative beyond Wagner’s original vision.
The Devil in Our Midst was written by Steven T. Seagle and illustrated by Stefano Raffaele. The creative team leaned into a gritty, visceral aesthetic that complemented the series' thematic focus on cultism, identity, and the corrupting nature of the Grendel mask. The artwork was lauded at the time for its moody, cinematic composition, which helped solidify the Grendel Tales imprint as a vital expansion of independent comic book storytelling in the mid-nineties.
