Where it came from
Guardians of the Galaxy #45, published in January 1994, emerged during the height of the original incarnation of the team within the Marvel Universe. Written by Michael Gallagher and illustrated by Kevin West, this issue captures the gritty, space-faring aesthetic common to 1990s science fiction comics. It functions as a chapter in the long-running series that reimagined the Guardians as freedom fighters in a future timeline, reflecting a shift toward darker, more character-driven narratives prevalent in that era of Marvel storytelling.
The creative direction for this series sought to carve out a distinct corner of the cosmic Marvel landscape, moving away from more traditional superhero tropes. By focusing on an eclectic ensemble of anti-heroes, Gallagher and West aimed to build complex internal dynamics amidst large-scale interstellar conflict. The issue is remembered by collectors as a representative piece of the original Guardians continuity, serving as a reminder of the team's evolution prior to their significant rebranding in the 21st century.
