Gyakkō no Kuru-chan #1

Gyakkō no Kuru-chan, or 'Kuru-chan in the Backlight,' emerged as a niche but stylistically significant entry in the landscape of mid-century Japanese shōjo manga. Created by artist and illustrator Ryoichi Ikegami during his early formative years before his pivot to more mature, gritty seinen works, the series reflects the whimsical, experimental aesthetic of the era’s storytelling. It was designed to cater to a young demographic eager for lighthearted narratives, utilizing the clean lines and expressive character designs that would eventually become hallmarks of Ikegami's evolving technical mastery.

The first issue serves as an introduction to the titular character, establishing a visual language defined by delicate ink work and evocative atmospheric panels that played with light and shadow—a technique that hinted at the sophisticated stylistic shifts the author would later explore. While the series did not achieve the widespread commercial ubiquity of major industrial hits, it gained a reputation among manga historians and dedicated collectors for its rarity and its role as a representative artifact of the author’s stylistic roots in the shōjo genre.
