Hanako-Gari #1

Hanako-Gari #1 emerged from the independent manga scene in the late 1990s, created by the artist known as Natsuki Sumeragi. The work is deeply rooted in the aesthetic traditions of gothic horror and psychological suspense, serving as a signature example of Sumeragi's moody, atmospheric storytelling. It was crafted to explore themes of folklore and obsession, utilizing intricate line work to build a sense of creeping unease that distinguishes it within the alternative manga landscape of its time.

The design of the volume reflects a deliberate commitment to a sophisticated, darker illustrative style that prioritizes shadow and texture over traditional shojo conventions. By focusing on the interplay between the mundane and the supernatural, Sumeragi achieved a distinct visual signature that resonated with a niche audience seeking more mature, contemplative horror narratives. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic standout, praised by critics for its artistic precision and its ability to sustain a haunting tone through its minimalist compositions.
