Hanako-san, Tabenai de #1

Hanako-san, Tabenai de, written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno, first appeared in the Japanese manga landscape as a horror-comedy series. It centers on a whimsical take on the well-known urban legend of Hanako of the Toilet, subverting the typical ghost story tropes by framing the spirit through a darkly humorous and eccentric lens. The first volume serves as the introduction to this unique dynamic, establishing the bizarre relationship between the titular spectral girl and the protagonists who encounter her.

The design and narrative tone reflect Esuno’s signature style, which often blends supernatural elements with high-energy, unconventional character interactions. Upon its release, the volume was recognized for its distinctive pacing and the way it navigated the balance between genuine creepiness and comedic absurdity. It set the groundwork for the rest of the series, drawing readers interested in modern Japanese folklore reinterpretations and the specific stylistic evolution of Esuno’s body of work.
