Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai #19

Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai, serialized as A Condition Called Love, was created by manga artist Megumi Morino and began its run in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine in 2017. The series explores the intricate emotional evolution of Hotaru Hinase, a girl who struggles to understand romantic love, and Hananoi, a boy who experiences love with overwhelming intensity. Issue 19 serves as a later installment in this long-running shōjo narrative, reflecting Morino’s signature delicate linework and focus on internal character development.

The aesthetic of the series is characterized by its soft, atmospheric framing and an emphasis on the quiet, often painful transitions of adolescence. Morino designed the series to subvert traditional shōjo tropes, prioritizing the healthy communication between the protagonists over typical melodrama. Since its inception, the work has been widely celebrated for its gentle pacing and depth, eventually earning the 45th Kodansha Manga Award for the shōjo category in 2021.
