Hank Howard Pizza Detective in The Two Hollywoods #2

Hank Howard, Pizza Detective in The Two Hollywoods was a mid-1990s independent comic series that blended the noir detective trope with the surreal aesthetic of the era’s alternative press. Created and illustrated by Tom Hart, the series emerged from the vibrant and often experimental landscape of small-press comics, where creators frequently pushed the boundaries of narrative structure and character design. The title, characterized by its dry wit and idiosyncratic protagonist, served as a showcase for Hart’s minimalist ink work and penchant for absurd situational comedy.

The second issue of this series further established the tone of Hart’s work, which was generally well-received within independent comic circles for its stylistic confidence and unconventional approach to the mystery genre. While the series remains a niche item today, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of 90s underground comics as a notable example of the era's creative spirit. Its design reflects the DIY ethos of self-published books from that period, prioritizing distinct visual characterization over the mainstream polished aesthetic.
