Heart of Thomas #1

Heart of Thomas, or 'Thomas no Shinzo', was serialized in the manga magazine Weekly Margaret beginning in 1974. Created by Moto Hagio, a foundational figure of the Year 24 Group, the story centers on the tragic suicide of a student at a German boarding school and the subsequent emotional reverberations among his peers. It is widely considered a landmark work in the development of the shonen-ai and boys' love genres, lauded for its psychological depth and innovative use of internal monologue.

Hagio designed the manga to explore complex themes of grief, identity, and adolescent desire through a refined, ethereal aesthetic that broke away from the rigid conventions of 1970s shojo art. Her delicate character designs and non-linear narrative structure were initially met with some bewilderment by editors accustomed to more traditional romance tropes, yet the work eventually garnered immense critical acclaim for its literary sensitivity and is now recognized as a masterpiece of twentieth-century Japanese comics.
