Where it came from
Heathcliff #1, published by Marvel Comics in 1985, marked the character's transition from a long-running newspaper comic strip to a standalone comic book format. Created by George Gately in 1973, the orange tabby had already achieved immense popularity through syndication and a successful animated television series, creating a significant appetite for comic book adaptations during the mid-eighties.
The comic was designed to capture the slapstick, mischievous nature of Gately’s original drawings, which were characterized by thick outlines and expressive, chaotic physical comedy. The debut issue leaned into the character's role as a neighborhood disruptor, maintaining a lighthearted tone that appealed to young readers and casual fans of the franchise's wider merchandise.
